Best Self Defense Techniques that can Help in Any Situation

Today it is essential to know how to react to dangerous situations to keep you safe. Self-defense is the act of defeating an attacker, regardless of their physical strength, and without using weapons. It is not based on force but speed and boldness in situations of danger or threat. If you are in martial arts or combat sports classes, ask your teacher to teach you self defence techniques and keys.

The following are the best self-defense tips and techniques that can help you if you receive an attack or are under any threat:

Use the correct weapons: If you are going to hit to defend yourself, do it with the hardest parts of the body: knees, elbows. Women have the sharpest bones than a man, and with these parts of the body, you have more chance of cutting the other. If you have any blunt or sharp objects at hand, it is also valid.

Measure distances well: If you are at a long distance, kick it. At a medium distance, you can hit her knees or fist bumps. At close range, even when the aggressor comes over you, use your elbows – the tip of the elbow is very hard, and well used can even cut the skin of your opponent.

It gives precise blows: The areas of the body that you should hit are the chin, throat, solar plexus, and genitals. A nudge on the face, a knee in the pit of the stomach or on the genitals are blunt blows that can immobilize the opponent for the short time you need to flee. You don’t need to use as much force as you do.

Take care of your peripheral vision: Even if you have dominated your aggressor, you must remain attentive to what is happening around you, because it may be accompanied. If you see that there is someone else involved in the attack, try to put all the aggressors within your field of vision.

Use your car or house keys: An excellent self-defense movement at self defence classes is that you hold your keys in a position of self-defense, that is, put the keys between your fingers as if they were a mitten. It may seem unusual, but it will be very useful when you require self-defense against aggression.

Remember that self-defense is an intelligent adaptation to situations that put you in danger, it is not necessary to know martial arts to learn to defend yourself.

There are a few streams of Krav Maga, and Krav Maga Maleh is one of them.

For this system there are only two core principles on which all defenses are based on.

Principle 1: Natural

The first one is termed NATURAL. This means we would like to do natural movements, meaning that we don’t want to do complicated movements. Such movements should not be movements where you have to train years and years in order to perform them well or make them a second nature. Instead, we take a look at what our second nature is when it comes to reactions and movements in certain situations. We build on top of our second nature the defenses.

Principal 2: Coverage

The second principle is termed COVERAGE. Many people confuse coverage with the literal meaning. Covering as much ground as possible when it comes to protecting our body. However, what is meant by coverage is using minimum movement against maximum attacks. This means we do not want to perform one or more defenses against one attack, we would like to find defenses that could be utilized against many attacks. For example, it doesn’t matter if someone kicks with their left or right leg, or if it is a straight kick or a side kick, what matters is that whatever the attack is, you are going to use one defense that applies or “covers” a number of attacks.

Can One Defense be Used Against All Attacks?

If there was only one defense that could be used against all types of attacks, that would be the ideal, but in reality such a defense does not exist, not yet.

Krav Maga is a form of self defense that is based on our instinctive movement. It was initially developed for the Israeli Defense Forces by Imi Lichtenfeld, and now it is being taught for civilian and police use as well.

But What is The Difference Between Krav Maga and Other Martial Arts?

Traditional martial arts include: Karate, aikido, taekwondo etc; whereas the modern martial arts include: boxing, muay thai, Krav Maga, MMA, and more.

The main difference between traditional and modern martial arts is the way of thinking behind the systems.

Traditional martial arts focus on the type of defense that would be the best defense, and the best reaction we should use against specific attacks. This reaction is the one that would be trained over and over, so as to regulate the body to react in that way by repetition. After years of training one can master those reactions and make it a second nature.

Krav Maga on the other hand, is the exact opposite in the way of thinking. Krav Maga focuses on our natural and instinctive reactions that we already have when under stress. The defense is built around these types of reactions (and not the other way around). Since this system of martial arts uses our already instinctive natural movements, it means it is easy for us to react that way to begin with (as we would react this way regardless of whether we want to or not). This is why only within a few sessions of training, you would increase your chance of defending yourself since you would already know what to do under stress.

Krav Maga focuses on real life situations too and it is an adaptive system meaning it changes as the attacks change.

Why would someone threat you with a knife?

One thing is for sure, they don’t want to hurt you, not yet. If you show the perpetrator that you are resistive or that you want to fight back, this might lead them to changing their tactic and actually hurting you.

However, in a threat scenario, they do not want to necessarily. So why are they threatening you?

A threat knife normally occurs for three reasons, the attacker wants:

1) Information

2) to rob you (money, phone, car keys etc)

3) to abduct you- moving you from one position to another.

How can you avoid such an attack?

First of all, being aware of your surroundings can help reduce the likelihood of being attacked/threatened. Instead of taking the road less travelled at night or in a shady neighbourhood/ road, choose the busy streets with more people and traffic. Do not stop while you’re walking at night to check something in your purse, or take something out of your purse (this gives the attacker a reason to approach you).

Know where you are heading, who is around you, and who looks suspicious. Have an “escape plan”, be prepared!

One way to be prepared is to learn a few simple basic self defense skills, that anyone can learn! It doesn’t matter what level you are in martial arts, if you don’t have experience at all, or if you feel you are not fit enough to fight. At the end of the day it is not about fighting, it is protecting the most important asset- that is YOU, using a simple technique that works with anyone at all levels.
