People often ask me when is a good time to start learning self defense. The obvious answer is “as early as you can”. The younger you are the better it is. In reality though, you can start learning Krav Maga at any time! When you learn Krav Maga you increase the chances of defending yourself and surviving- regardless of your age.

Kids and Adults Learning Krav Maga

Kids have different maturity level- both at the personality and physical levels. Just as some children grow up faster and others take a bit more time, the same is for maturity level. Some kids are able to pay better attention and learn certain movements faster, and in general grasp the material quicker, while others may require some more time. What is most important is that children are having fun and want to learn Krav Maga. When being forced to perform some activity, it will not be sustainable, meaning you will no longer want to do it since it is no longer fun and motivating. So we definitely recommend to allow your children to try Krav Maga and self defense; if they enjoy it, you’ll see- they will stick with the program.

For teenagers and adults, there are different reasons for training. For example, you may want to join to get fit, learn self defense, or simply do it for the social aspect (getting out of your normal routine to perform a unique activity, meet new people and make new friends). An attack has a number of elements, some we can change or control and the others we cant.

The three elements include:

  • The Attacker
  • The Victim
  • The Location

Unfortunately the attacker is the element we cannot change. We cannot control when an attacker will strike, and how or what they will use to attack someone.

The elements we can manipulate

There is one element we can manipulate – the victim. With time and proper training, a “victim” can become the warrior. Over time and with practice we can change our reaction towards any attack, and be able to defend ourselves and know how to react under stress.

Another element we can change is the location. Most attacks usually occur in specific locations such as dark alleys, parking lots, late at night in a secluded area or street, isolated parks etc. In these places where there are not a lot of people to begin with, it would be difficult to ask for help, and there usually won’t be anyone around to lend a hand. Even if you scream for help, since such areas are secluded and isolated from the rest of the public, it may not help.

The easiest element you can manipulate in any attack:

We can definitely manipulate this element quickly, by just avoiding going to these places. It might sound “crazy” because you might think, “ but I have to park underground, it’s the only place to park my car, so what can I do?” Well, if this is the only option, another tip is to try and go in groups. Going in groups will intimidate any attacker, and will reduce the likelihood that something will happen. When walking outside in the dark, you can also talk on the phone, this way there is someone ‘looking after you’ remotely.

There are a few streams of Krav Maga, and Krav Maga Maleh is one of them.

For this system there are only two core principles on which all defenses are based on.

Principle 1: Natural

The first one is termed NATURAL. This means we would like to do natural movements, meaning that we don’t want to do complicated movements. Such movements should not be movements where you have to train years and years in order to perform them well or make them a second nature. Instead, we take a look at what our second nature is when it comes to reactions and movements in certain situations. We build on top of our second nature the defenses.

Principal 2: Coverage

The second principle is termed COVERAGE. Many people confuse coverage with the literal meaning. Covering as much ground as possible when it comes to protecting our body. However, what is meant by coverage is using minimum movement against maximum attacks. This means we do not want to perform one or more defenses against one attack, we would like to find defenses that could be utilized against many attacks. For example, it doesn’t matter if someone kicks with their left or right leg, or if it is a straight kick or a side kick, what matters is that whatever the attack is, you are going to use one defense that applies or “covers” a number of attacks.

Can One Defense be Used Against All Attacks?

If there was only one defense that could be used against all types of attacks, that would be the ideal, but in reality such a defense does not exist, not yet.

Krav Maga is a form of self defense that is based on our instinctive movement. It was initially developed for the Israeli Defense Forces by Imi Lichtenfeld, and now it is being taught for civilian and police use as well.

But What is The Difference Between Krav Maga and Other Martial Arts?

Traditional martial arts include: Karate, aikido, taekwondo etc; whereas the modern martial arts include: boxing, muay thai, Krav Maga, MMA, and more.

The main difference between traditional and modern martial arts is the way of thinking behind the systems.

Traditional martial arts focus on the type of defense that would be the best defense, and the best reaction we should use against specific attacks. This reaction is the one that would be trained over and over, so as to regulate the body to react in that way by repetition. After years of training one can master those reactions and make it a second nature.

Krav Maga on the other hand, is the exact opposite in the way of thinking. Krav Maga focuses on our natural and instinctive reactions that we already have when under stress. The defense is built around these types of reactions (and not the other way around). Since this system of martial arts uses our already instinctive natural movements, it means it is easy for us to react that way to begin with (as we would react this way regardless of whether we want to or not). This is why only within a few sessions of training, you would increase your chance of defending yourself since you would already know what to do under stress.

Krav Maga focuses on real life situations too and it is an adaptive system meaning it changes as the attacks change.
